Our Health Guarantee
Every Selkirkish kitten comes with a written one-year health guarantee covering genetic and congenital issues. Here is exactly what that means.
"Every Selkirkish kitten is backed by a one-year written health guarantee. If a covered issue arises, we make it right."
What our guarantee covers
Our health guarantee is straightforward. It covers genetic and congenital health issues attributable to our breeding, identified within one year of your kitten going home. This protection is automatic and included with every Selkirkish kitten adoption.
Covered
- Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD)
- Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) of genetic origin
- Congenital birth defects diagnosed within one year
- Genetic conditions traceable to the breeding line
- Inherited structural or organ defects
Not Covered
- Illness or injury caused by accident or neglect
- Issues resulting from improper diet or housing
- Communicable diseases contracted after delivery
- Behavioural concerns (training, biting, scratching)
- Any condition diagnosed after the one-year window
In short: if something is wrong with your kitten because of how we bred them, that is on us. If something happens to your kitten because of how they are cared for after delivery, that is on the family. The guarantee is designed to protect you against issues we should have caught before placement.
How to claim the guarantee
If you suspect your kitten has a covered health issue, here is what happens. The process is simple and we work with you every step.
01
Contact us
Reach out via phone or email as soon as a vet identifies a potential genetic or congenital concern.
02
Vet documentation
Provide written vet diagnosis confirming the issue is genetic or congenital in origin, not acquired after delivery.
03
Review
We review the documentation. If the issue is covered we discuss the remedy with you directly.
04
Resolution
Depending on the situation, we offer a replacement kitten from a future litter or a refund. We work with you on what is right.
Your responsibility as the new owner
The health guarantee depends on you fulfilling a few simple responsibilities once your kitten arrives. These are standard for any reputable cattery and they protect both you and the kitten.
- Vet visit within 72 hours. Take your kitten to a licensed veterinarian within three days of arrival. This protects you and confirms the kitten arrived healthy. A vet record from this visit is required to activate the guarantee. The vet will give you a baseline health record you can reference if anything comes up later.
- Follow vaccination schedule. Continue the vaccination schedule your vet recommends. Your kitten arrives with their initial FVRCP series. Missing booster shots can void the guarantee. Your vet will tell you when boosters are due, typically at 12 and 16 weeks.
- Appropriate care. Feed quality food, provide clean water, keep them indoors, and maintain a safe home environment. Any covered claim assumes the kitten received reasonable care. The Selkirk Rex is an indoor breed and should never be allowed to roam outdoors.
- Notify us promptly. If a health concern arises, contact us as soon as a vet identifies the issue. Delays beyond 30 days from diagnosis can complicate the claim process. The sooner we know, the easier it is to verify and resolve.
- Maintain documentation. Keep records of all vet visits, vaccinations, and treatments. You will need these if you file a claim. Most vet offices will email you copies on request if you need to compile a record.
None of these are unreasonable. They are simply the baseline standards any responsible cat owner already meets. We provide vaccination records and a health certificate at adoption so you have what you need to start your kitten's medical history on a strong foundation.
What if something covered happens?
Genetic issues are rare in our breeding line because we screen our breeding cats thoroughly. But if a covered condition arises within the guarantee period, here is what you can expect from us.
Option 1: Replacement kitten
We offer a kitten of equivalent value from a future litter. You return the affected kitten to us (we cover transport), or in most cases the family chooses to keep them as a beloved pet because they are part of the family by then. Most cases we keep both options open.
Option 2: Partial or full refund
If a replacement kitten is not the right fit, we offer a partial or full refund of the adoption fee, depending on the situation and how the kitten was placed.
Option 3: Veterinary cost support
In some cases, especially mild congenital issues that are treatable, we contribute to vet costs rather than replace or refund. The right resolution depends on the circumstances and we discuss it openly with you.
The goal is always to make sure you and your kitten are taken care of. We have been breeding Selkirk Rex for 8 years and we want every family to be happy long-term. Read more about how we operate and our breeding philosophy.
Why we offer this guarantee
Most kitten flippers do not offer a written health guarantee, and the ones that do often write it in ways designed to never pay out. Ours is different because we actually want to stand behind every kitten we place.
We have been breeding Selkirk Rex for 8 years. In that time we have built a screening process that catches genetic concerns before any cat enters our breeding program. Both parents of every litter are tested for PKD, HCM, FIV, and FeLV before they ever produce kittens. We turn down breeding pairs that do not pass. This is why genetic claims against our line are rare.
But rare is not the same as impossible. Even with careful screening, congenital conditions can develop in any litter. When that happens we want our families to know exactly what we will do about it, in writing, with no fine print. That is what this guarantee gives you.
We are not a kitten mill. We are a family running a small cattery from our home in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Our kittens are part of our family until they go home to yours, and we stay involved for life. The guarantee is just one piece of that.
