What is a Selkirk Rex?
The Selkirk Rex is a curly-coated cat breed that originated in Montana in 1987 from a natural genetic mutation. The breed is recognized by TICA and CFA and is known for its plush, dense curls, round face, and exceptionally patient, affectionate personality. They are often called "the cat in sheep's clothing." Are Selkirk Rex cats hypoallergenic?
Selkirk Rex cats are not fully hypoallergenic. No cat breed truly is. However, their dense curly coat traps loose hair and dander more effectively than straight-coated breeds, which makes them a better option for many mild allergy sufferers. How long do Selkirk Rex cats live?

Do Selkirk Rex cats shed?
Yes, all cats shed and Selkirk Rex are no exception. However, their curly coat tends to trap loose hair within the curls rather than releasing it onto furniture. Are they good with children and other pets?
Yes. The Selkirk Rex is known for being patient, calm, and tolerant. They do well with respectful children and typically get along with other cats and dogs when properly introduced. Their easygoing temperament makes them an excellent family breed.

Our kittens
What is included with each kitten?
Every Selkirkish kitten goes home with complete vaccination records, deworming, a vet-issued health certificate, and a written one-year health guarantee. We also include a starter kit with food, a familiar blanket, and care instructions. Browse available kittens to see what is available now.
Is your cattery TICA registered?
Yes. Selkirkish is a TICA-registered cattery, which means we follow TICA's code of ethics and breed standards. Our breeding cats come from health-tested lines, and we maintain ethical breeding practices in line with TICA requirements.
What age are kittens when they go home?
Our kittens go home at 12 weeks. By this age they are fully weaned, eating solid food, litter trained, socialized, and have completed their initial vaccination series. Sending kittens home younger is not safe or ethical.
What health testing do you do on parents?
Both parents are tested negative for PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease), HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy), FIV, and FeLV. Full genetic panel results are available on request before adoption. We do not breed cats we have not fully vetted. Meet our breeding cats and view their health profiles.

How does the adoption process work?
Browse available kittens, contact us with your preference, and complete secure payment. Once payment is received we arrange delivery via the safest method for your route. Each kitten arrives with all paperwork and a starter kit. The full process is fast and transparent.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept Apple Pay, Zelle, and Chime. All payments are processed securely. We do not accept payments through unsecured channels.
Do you ship nationwide?
Yes. We ship to all 50 states in the USA. Delivery method depends on your location and the safest route for the kitten.
How fast is delivery?
Delivery time depends on the method we use for your route. A pet nanny flight can arrive within hours of departure, while ground transport across several states may take a day or two. We confirm a specific delivery window at the time of reservation. See full shipping details.
How is the kitten transported safely?
We use licensed pet transport services and trusted pet nanny services depending on your destination. Every kitten travels with proper documentation, a vet-issued health certificate, and an airline-approved or transporter-approved carrier. Safety is our top priority.
Can I pick up the kitten in person?
In-person pickup may be available depending on your location and our schedule. Contact us with your situation and we can discuss options.

Health and genetics
What genetic conditions are tested?
Both parents are screened for PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) and HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy), the two most relevant conditions for Selkirk Rex genetics. Both also test negative for FIV and FeLV. Full results are available on request.
What is the difference between heterozygous and homozygous curly?
Heterozygous curly means the kitten carries one copy of the curl gene and one straight gene. Homozygous curly means two copies of the curl gene. Homozygous kittens often have tighter, denser curls. What vaccinations do kittens have?
Kittens receive their initial FVRCP vaccination series before going home. Full vaccination records are provided at adoption so your vet can continue the schedule on time.
When should I take my new kitten to the vet?
We recommend a vet visit within 72 hours of arrival. This is a standard requirement of our health guarantee and ensures any concerns are caught early. Your vet will continue the vaccination schedule.

Coat and grooming
How often should I groom a Selkirk Rex?
A weekly gentle combing is usually enough for shorthair Selkirk Rex. Longhair varieties may need brushing twice a week to prevent tangles. Do not over-brush, as excessive grooming straightens the curls.
What is the difference between shorthair and longhair Selkirk Rex?
Shorthair Selkirk Rex have plush, dense curls close to the body. Longhair Selkirk Rex have full, flowing curls that extend longer especially on the tail and ruff. Can I bathe a Selkirk Rex?
Yes. An occasional bath helps maintain the curl and skin health. Use a gentle cat shampoo, towel dry, and let the coat air dry naturally to preserve the curls. Avoid blow drying or vigorous towel rubbing.
Why do kittens look less curly at certain ages?
Selkirk Rex kittens go through a coat change at around 8 to 10 months. Their kitten coat sheds out and the adult curls fully come in afterward. The curls return tighter and fuller as they mature.

Living with a Selkirk Rex
Are they good for apartment living?
Yes. Selkirk Rex are calm, adaptable, and content in apartments. They do not need outdoor access to be happy as long as they have enrichment, climbing space, and human attention indoors.
How active are they?
Selkirk Rex are moderately active. They enjoy playtime and interactive toys but are far more lap-cat than athlete. Expect calm cuddles broken up by short play bursts.
Are they vocal?
Generally no. Selkirk Rex are quieter than breeds like Siamese or Bengals. They communicate but are not constantly vocal.
Can they be left alone during the workday?
Selkirk Rex are independent enough to handle a workday alone, but they bond closely with their humans and prefer company. If you are away long hours, consider adopting a second cat as a companion.

After bringing your kitten home
What kind of support do you offer after adoption?
Lifetime breeder support. You can text us with any question about your kitten at any time, whether it is about grooming, behaviour, diet, or general health concerns. We stay involved with our families for life.
What food do kittens come on?
We send your kitten home with a small bag of the food they are currently eating. We recommend continuing the same food for the first two weeks to avoid stomach upset, then transitioning gradually if you prefer a different brand.
What if I have a health issue after delivery?
Contact us immediately and take the kitten to your vet. Our written health guarantee covers genetic and congenital issues within the first year. Have your vet documentation ready and we will work with you on the next steps.
How do I help my kitten settle in?
Start your kitten in one quiet room with food, water, litter, and a familiar blanket from us. Let them explore at their own pace. Most kittens are fully comfortable in a new home within 2 to 5 days.

What are red flags when buying a Selkirk Rex kitten?
Watch out for breeders who refuse to share parent health test results, ship kittens before 12 weeks, ask for payment through unsecured methods, cannot show TICA registration, or pressure you into a fast decision. Reputable breeders welcome questions and provide documentation.
Why are some Selkirk Rex kittens so much cheaper?
Very low prices usually indicate no health testing, no TICA registration, or a kitten that was bred without proper care for the parents or litter. The savings often turn into expensive vet bills or heartbreak later. A reasonable price reflects real care, real testing, and ongoing breeder support.
